From the Streets to Schoolbooks

Subuhi Mudanya’s Journey with Davion Cares Foundation Uganda

In the bustling town of Bugiri, Uganda, where life moves fast and survival is often the priority, stories of forgotten children are far too common. But every now and then, a story emerges — not of despair, but of resilience, hope, and transformation.

This is Subuhi’s story. A story that reflects the heart of what Davion Cares Foundation Uganda stands for.

Lost in the Crowd

At just 9 years old, Subuhi found himself alone on the streets of Bugiri. His mother had passed away when he was very young, and after years of hardship, his extended family could no longer support him. Like many children in Uganda, Subuhi became a victim of circumstances beyond his control.

With no one to turn to, Subuhi’s days were spent scavenging for food in market stalls and sleeping in shop corridors. He quickly learned to navigate the dangers of street life — avoiding older boys, dodging trouble, and surviving on scraps.

“I used to wake up not knowing if I would eat that day,” Subuhi recalls quietly. “I was always hungry… and afraid.”

A Chance Encounter

It was during one of these long days, wandering near the taxi park, that Subuhi’s life took a turn. A caregiver from Davion Cares Foundation Uganda noticed the small boy sitting alone, barefoot and tired.

After several days of gentle conversations — building trust with a child who had learned to trust no one — Subuhi agreed to visit the foundation.

“I didn’t believe people could help me,” Subuhi admits. “But they kept coming back to talk to me. They didn’t give up.”

Finding Family Again

When Subuhi arrived at Davion Cares Foundation, he was malnourished, quiet, and wary. But for the first time in years, he had a bed to sleep in, regular meals, and people who genuinely cared about his well-being.

Slowly, things began to change.

With medical care, proper nutrition, and counselling, Subuhi ’s health improved. But perhaps the biggest transformation came when he was handed his first schoolbook.

“I had never been to school before,” he says, his eyes lighting up. “I didn’t know how to read or write. But my teachers helped me. Now I can read stories!”

Subuhi was enrolled in the foundation’s education program, where he quickly discovered a love for learning. Today, at 13 years old, he’s thriving in primary school, catching up on years he thought were lost forever.

Dreaming Beyond Survival

Beyond academics, Subuhi has found joy in simple things — playing football with friends, singing during afternoon activities, and learning how to grow vegetables in the foundation’s small garden.

When asked about his dreams, Subuhi no longer talks about finding his next meal or a safe place to sleep. Instead, he smiles confidently and says:

“I want to become a teacher. I want to help other children like me who didn’t have anyone.”

The Power of Hope

Subuhi’s story is just one among many at Davion Cares Foundation Uganda. Every child who walks through the gates carries a past filled with pain, but also the potential for a brighter future.

Thanks to the dedication of caregivers, volunteers, and supporters, children like Subuhi are rewriting their stories — from survival to success, from loneliness to belonging.
